Performing
My first paid gig was when I was 12, more than 30 years ago, and I have been singing professionally ever since.
I first started taking my singing seriously at the University of Wales, Cardiff, where I was awarded the Geraint Evans award for Vocal Performance and in the years since, I have continued to learn from amazing singers and musicians.
As a soloist I do as many varied things as I can. I love the standard oratorio works like Handel Messiah and Mozart Coronation Mass, and in the past few years have sung my first Verdi and Brahms Requiems. I love acting with song too, in operas (such as Santuzza in Mascagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana) and in more avant garde song cycles.
Recitals and Chamber Music give you the chance to spread the repertoire wings, and I love singing American and English Art Song. I performed the amazing John Cage work The Wonderful Widow of Eighteen Springs live on BBC Radio 3, have sung as part of the Northern Chords and Brundibar Festivals, and regularly perform with other North East musicians in a range of chamber music for voice, happily turning my hand to any language - from French to Yiddish.
A passionate choral singer, I’m a founder member of the award-winning chamber choir Voices of Hope and also sing with the St James Consort. I sang in Northern Sinfonia Chorus for many years, and have toured the world with choirs. My love for ensemble singing has even seen me touring as a backing vocalist for the super cool Danish band Efterklang.
